Untrained. Unrefined. But Unmistakable. Why being a self-taught British voice over artist is my greatest strength.

In a world full of classically trained voice actors, drama school graduates, and polished RP pipes, it might sound like heresy to say I’ve never had a voice coach. No weekend workshops. No “find your signature tone” webinars. No mentor whispering industry secrets in my ear.

And yet - here I am. A full-time male British voice over artist with a pretty decent client list, a studio, and a body of work spanning eLearning, commercials, explainers, corporate narration and plenty of other voiced bits and bobs out there in the big wide world.

But being untrained doesn’t mean being unprofessional. And being unrefined doesn’t mean rough.

Me, being all 'untrained' and that

To be crystal clear, I’ve got nothing against training. Some of the best voices in the business have learned from some of the best voices in the business and taken that well-trodden path - and it’s served them well.

But that has not been my path. I came into voice over a very long way round. I learned by doing. By listening. By experimenting. By being rubbish and sounding awful. And by working the freelancer sites before they became unworkable and saturated, and recording a lot of small projects for independent producers!

So that means the voice you hear in my demos and client work isn’t shaped by the instructions or guidance of others. It’s shaped by intuition and experience.

Every little indie project or nerve-wracking high stakes gig teaches you something new and over the years, I’ve picked up what works, what doesn’t, and how to connect a message with an audience. This hands-on experience is the same reason I’m trusted by clients for eLearning narration projects where clarity, tone and trust are crucial – and for commercial voice overs where delivery can make or break a campaign.

Why It Matters to You

If you’re hiring a voice over artist, you’re not interested in a CV, past record or indeed care that the VO spent £500 for an afternoon with a voice over Yoda. You simply want someone who:

  • Sounds natural - not performative

  • Gets the brief fast - without overcomplicating it

  • Delivers clean, pro-level audio - without hand-holding

  • Feels real - not like someone reading lines

That’s what I bring. A grounded, real-world voice that’s been shaped by experience, not theatre and a British male voice that doesn’t sound like every other one on the circuit.

The Industry Needs All Types

There’s room in this industry for trained and untrained voices alike. But the narrative’s dominated by the award-wielding drama school crowd and there is lots of room for the grafters and the self-made. There's no shame in entering the stage from the other side. Because voice over really is very simple - how do you sound?
